What Claude Is and Where It Shines

Claude is the AI assistant from Anthropic. Like ChatGPT, it converses, drafts, codes, and analyzes; unlike ChatGPT, its personality tilts toward careful, structured, long-form thinking. Three things drive people to Claude specifically: writing that needs less editing, an unusually large attention span for long documents, and a reasoning style that shows its work. In our own testing, and on public leaderboards, Claude's frontier models currently sit at the very top of the field, which is why so many professionals quietly run their serious work through it.

Step 1: Set Up

1Go to claude.ai or install the mobile and desktop apps. Sign up with email or Google.
2Start on the free tier. You get the flagship experience with daily message limits, generous enough to learn on and use casually.
3Know the plans. Pro (about $20/mo) raises limits substantially and unlocks heavier features; Max tiers exist for power users who essentially live in it.

Step 2: The Interface

Claude keeps it minimal: a message box, a paperclip for attachments, a model picker, and a sidebar of chats. Two features deserve immediate attention. Projects are workspaces with their own knowledge (files you upload once) and custom instructions that apply to every chat inside. Artifacts are a side panel where Claude builds documents, code, and even small interactive apps you can edit and iterate on next to the conversation, dramatically better than scrolling chat history for anything you are actually building.

Step 3: Prompting Claude Well

Claude responds especially well to context and honesty about what you want:

Copy-paste starter prompt: "Here is my situation: [context]. Here is what I am trying to produce: [goal]. Draft it, then critique your own draft in two sentences and produce an improved version." This single pattern produces some of the best one-shot output any AI tool can give you.

Step 4: The Workflows That Make Claude Worth It

The giant document workflow

Upload a contract, a book manuscript, a 100-page report, or several files at once, and ask real questions: "what obligations survive termination," "where does the argument contradict itself," "build a timeline of events across these files." Claude's long context window means it actually reads the whole thing rather than skimming.

The writing partnership workflow

Draft in Claude, then iterate: tighten, expand, change audience, restructure. Writers report the difference is fewer AI-isms to scrub out. For anything published under your name, do a final pass in your own voice, and consider keeping a project with your style samples uploaded so every draft starts closer to you.

The project memory workflow

Create a project per client, course, or venture. Upload the standing documents once, set instructions ("you are helping me run a 40-unit property portfolio; be concise; flag legal risk"), and every future chat starts fully briefed. This is the single biggest quality-of-life feature for repeat work.

The coding workflow

Claude is currently the model to beat for code. In the chat app, artifacts give you runnable snippets and small apps; for real repositories, Claude Code takes tickets to tested pull requests from your terminal.

Free vs Pro: The Honest Math

💰 The Upgrade Math

Free tier$0 - learning and light use
Pro (about $20/mo)5x+ limits, priority, heavy features
Pay when...You hit the cap mid-task twice in a week

Free-tier limits arrive faster on Claude than on ChatGPT during heavy sessions, particularly with big documents. If your use is professional, writing, analysis, code, the cap will find you within a week, and Pro is the correct response.
