Every stat below comes from named 2025-2026 surveys and platform data, compiled in one place. The short version: fewer people run side hustles than at the 2022 peak, but the ones using AI are earning meaningfully more.

Get It on Amazon →Numbers about "making money with AI" are usually vibes. This report is the opposite: every figure below comes from a named 2025 or 2026 survey or platform dataset, with the source cited under each chart. Cite it, share it, link it. We update it annually.
Participation has actually declined from the post-pandemic peak: about 33% of Americans report a side hustle in 2026, down from 38% a year earlier and 44% in 2022 (LendingTree). But motivations hardened: most started one to cover everyday expenses, not fun money. Generationally it skews young, with roughly half of Gen Z and millennials running one, versus about a quarter of boomers.

The average and the median tell two different stories. LendingTree's 2026 survey puts average monthly side income at $1,242, up from $1,215 the year before. But averages are dragged upward by a small group of high earners: Bankrate's survey data puts typical monthly earnings closer to $200, and about half of side hustlers make $500 or less per month. If you're starting out, the median is the honest benchmark; the average is the ceiling story.

Here's where the data gets interesting. PwC's Global AI Jobs Barometer found workers with AI skills earn a 56% wage premium over colleagues in the same role without them, more than double the 25% premium measured in 2024. On Upwork, AI-fluent freelancers earn 40%+ more per hour than comparable non-AI work, against a platform-wide average around $39/hour. Full-time skilled freelancers report a median of about $85,000 a year, and 5.6 million US independents earned $100K+ in 2025, nearly double the 2020 count.
| AI freelance category | Typical hourly rate, 2026 |

Upwork's 2026 In-Demand Skills report shows demand for AI-tagged work more than doubled overall (+109% year over year), with the growth concentrated in hands-on production skills rather than "prompt engineering" hype:

Zety's gig workforce study found 94% of gig workers have used AI tools to support their work, 88% say AI has increased the value of their skills, and 86% believe AI has created entirely new kinds of gig opportunities. The takeaway is blunt: in 2026, AI usage is no longer an edge among gig workers - it's the baseline. The edge has moved to how well you use it.
Three practical conclusions fall out of the data. First, pick AI-native work: the same hours spent on an AI-skilled gig pay 40-56% more than the non-AI version. Second, aim at the growth categories - AI video, AI integration, and agent/chatbot builds are where demand is outrunning supply. Third, be realistic about the ramp: half of all side hustlers earn under $500/month, and the $1,000+/month tier is where people treating it like a business live. Our free 8-day course and income calculators are built for exactly that ramp.
Across all side hustles, the 2026 average is $1,242 per month (LendingTree), but roughly half of side hustlers earn $500 or less. AI-skilled work pays a documented premium: 40%+ higher hourly rates on Upwork and a 56% wage premium in PwC's data, so AI-native side hustles cluster above the general average.
By hourly rate, AI strategy consulting and industry-specific AI work (finance, healthcare) top the charts at $100-$300 per hour. By demand growth, AI video generation and editing is the fastest riser, up 329% year over year on Upwork.
Participation fell from 44% of Americans in 2022 to about 33% in 2026, but average earnings rose. Fewer, more serious operators are making more money, and AI skills are the main separator.
